‘Why Fitness matters more than your Gucci kit’
Look, we all love gear. Optics, Team Tango battle belts, holsters, night vision goggles that cost more than your car. But here’s the uncomfortable truth: if you get winded tying your boots, that $3,000 optic isn’t saving you.
Sure, you can enjoy shooting without being physically fit, but when you combine them—you’re making yourself that much more effective when it comes to getting rounds down. It isn’t just about your Marksmanship Principles.
Every time you pull the trigger, physics punches back. If your arms feel like overcooked spaghetti, that pistol or carbine is going to own you.
Now before you panic, no one’s saying you need to become a CrossFit champion or run ultramarathons. But if the heaviest thing you’ve lifted lately is a family-size pizza box, your range performance and your safety might be taking a hit.
Running and Gunning Means… Actually Running
In defensive or tactical scenarios, you might need to move—fast. It’s not “Call of Duty” where you can sprint endlessly with a 40-pound loadout and never break a sweat. In real life, that gear gets heavy.
On a calm sunny day, everyone’s a sniper. Add in a sprint or some burpees, and suddenly your perfect groups look like you were shooting with oven mitts on. Fitness helps you manage adrenaline, keeps your brain online when your body wants to quit, and make decisions under stress.
You know what doesn’t look cool? Tripping over your own feet whilst doing walk downs. A little leg strength goes a long way in staying upright and stable. It also means less fatigue, in turn enjoying more years of range time.
You don’t have to become a Navy SEAL overnight. Start small—bodyweight workouts, grip exercises, or just generally moving more. Your shooting will improve, your recovery will improve, and who knows—you might even enjoy the process.
If nothing else, at least you’ll look better in a Team Tango T-Shirt.
Until next time, Mitch.
