Fitness: The Gear You Can’’t Forget At Home
Welcome back to another blog from Strength Through Precision, this month’s is something I hold very dearly to my heart. Physical Fitness.
Ever wondered why all elite military syllabuses involve a lot of physical fitness?
Yes, it is to make people suffer, build resilience and find out who truly wants it. However, it goes deeper than endurance and strength.
Physical stress is one of the most effective ways to simulate chaos. When your heart rate is high, your breathing is heavy, and your muscles are fatigued, your body starts to mimic the physiological effects of fear and adrenaline. Fine motor skills degrade, decision-making gets harder, and small mistakes become more likely. That’s exactly what happens in high-pressure, real-world scenarios. Like a home invasion, for example.
We get a lot of students coming to Team Tango for Firearms training to be able to effectively react in a home defense scenario and to protect their loved ones, but it’s not just about the technical skills of stance, grip, sight picture, and trigger control. They’re all important, but there’s an elephant in the room that doesn’t get nearly enough attention: your body. When things go sideways, your fitness level isn’t just a bonus—it’s part of your equipment.
You can have the best firearm, top-tier training, and a belt kit from Crye Precision. But if you’re out of breath after jogging 20 meters or struggling to get up off the ground from the kneeling position (which I’ve seen more than once by the way), there’s a problem.
Being physically fit means:
- Moving quickly to cover
- Maintaining control of your firearm under stress
- Making life-changing decisions while your brain is running on adrenaline
Here’s the honest part: you don’t rise to the occasion—you fall to your level of preparation. That includes physical preparation.
I’m not suggesting you need to train like an elite athlete. But ignoring fitness entirely while focusing on firearms skills is like putting premium fuel in a car with flat tires. You’re not getting the performance you think you are.
Start Simple, you don’t need a complicated plan.
Consistency beats intensity every time.
