‘Can foreigners shoot weapons in Thailand’
Welcome to the first edition in the Strength Through Precision series, I’m glad you found yourself here. I’d like to take this opportunity to firstly introduce myself.
I’m Mitch, a Marketing Manager at Team Tango. Originally from the United Kingdom, I’m a former Royal Marines Commando where I spent 8 years on training exercises and operations globally. I have spent 3 years in Thailand, two of those have been working with Team Tango.
Enough of my life story, let me explain a little more about what the Strength Through Precision Blog is and what you can expect from it. Monthly, we’ll be talking about topics focused mainly in Thailand, giving you information about shooting, the tactical industry, fitness, tips, and stories from individuals in this arena. My goal is to keep you informed, so that you have the confidence to come to Thailand with a good prior knowledge of what’s going on in this part of the world.
In this edition, we’re going to be discussing whether foreigners can shoot in Thailand, or not. By “shoot”, I don’t mean shots of tequilla (though you can definitely do those out here). I’m talking about real, John Wick firearms.
Spoiler: You won’t need to join the Army. The short answer is yes, foreigners can shoot in Thailand. But before you start practicing your cowboy western duel draw, we need to clear a few things up.
If you’re a tourist or expat, you can’t just walk into a shop, buy a pistol, and stroll down Sukhumvit with it tucked into your waistband. Thailand has strict gun ownership laws – most foreigners are not allowed to legally own firearms here without going through certain steps, such as becoming a resident. BUT (and it’s a big but), you can go to shooting ranges. These are licensed facilities where you can rent guns, buy ammunition, and blast paper targets to your heart’s content. Just show your passport, sign some legal papers, and listen to the instructor.
The price of feeling like Rambo: expect to pay anywhere from 1,000 – 3,000 THB for a session, potentially more. This varies depending on the weapon and how many rounds of ammunition you want. Pro tip: rounds of ammunition vanish faster than your holiday budget, it isn’t cheap.
Thailand’s shooting ranges are generally well-regulated, with trained staff watching you like a hawk. Don’t worry – they’ve seen every tourist mistake in the book, holding the weapon sideways, posing for selfies mid-shoot, or trying to look cool with sunglasses indoors. (You won’t look cool. Promise).
So yes, foreigners can absolutely shoot in Thailand – legally, safely, and without needing to join a gang or the military. Just head to a licensed shooting range, bring your passport, and leave your gangster sideways pistol grip at the door. OR, get in touch with Team Tango for professionally run courses!
Until next time,
Mitch.
